Build a Transformer Spare-Parts Kit (What to Stock & Why)

Most transformer downtime is caused by a cheap, available part that nobody stocked. A small, well-chosen spare-parts kit turns a multi-week outage into a same-day fix. This guide lists what to keep on the shelf.

1. The logic: stock the consumables, not the big iron

You do not stock a whole transformer. You stock the wear-and-tear items that fail first and are cheap to hold but expensive to wait for: seals, desiccant, and a couple of standby Protection devices.

2. Recommended kit contents

ItemWhy stock itTypical qty
Gasket / seal setsLeaks are the #1 field fault; seals perish with heat and age.TBD* per unit
Silica gel (breather refill)Desiccant saturates; a colour-change refill keeps air dry.2–3 refill packs
Conservator rubber capsuleDiaphragm fatigue causes oil contact with air.1 spare
Standby Buchholz relayFast swap restores protection without a long lead time.1 per fleet
Pressure relief valveSpring fatigue or seizure; critical safety device.1 spare
Oil-level indicator sparesFloat / magnet wear.1 spare

3. Mixed loading saves freight

The whole point of buying from a single accessories supplier is that all of the above ship in one consolidated box. Instead of sourcing gaskets from one vendor, silica gel from another and relays from a third, you place one order and save the freight and paperwork of three shipments.

Quantities marked TBD* depend on your fleet size and transformer models — tell us how many units you maintain and we will size the kit.

4. For distribution substations

If you run a 33/11 kV (or similar) distribution substation, see our spare-parts page for distribution substations — same logic, pre-bundled by typical substation layout.

FAQ

Q: How long do silica gel and capsules last in storage?
A: Sealed desiccant and rubber parts have long shelf life if kept dry and out of direct sun; we advise rotating stock every few years.

Q: Can the kit be customised to my transformer models?
A: Yes — send your model list and we build the kit around your exact bore, pressure and mounting.

Q: Do you offer a ready-to-ship standard kit?
A: A standardised kit is being prepared; currently kits are configured per fleet. Ask us to size yours.
